Political Science and International Relations | Summer Research Program 2017

 

Summer Research Program aims to develop research skills of students from the Political Science and International Relations department. The program aims to develop technical skills of students by working in research projects of faculty members. There will be different project options and the students will be able to develop their research skills by taking active part in these research projects. Faculty members can develop new projects for the Summer Research Program or recruit students for their ongoing research projects.

Enrollment in the Summer Research Program is free. Researchers will not be provided free accommodation or food for the duration of the program. Students are also responsible for their own health insurance. The program is not part of the regular summer school of Bogazici University and there will be no grade or credit gained by participating in this program. The dates indicated below may be flexible and you may arrange both the location of work and timing with the Project coordinator.

Project 1

Project title: Authoritarian Reactions to Foreign Relief

Faculty member: Bann Seng Tan

Requirements: minimum 3.0 GPA

Job description: Ability to carry out web based research and newspaper archival search. An interest in humanitarian aid is ideal but not a requirement.

Project 2

Project Title: Turkey since 1980

Faculty member: Yeşim Arat

Requirements: min 3.0 GPA, 3rd or 4th year undergraduate student

Job description: Book project on socio economic political and cultural developments in Turkey after the 1980 coup till the 2015 referandum.

Help needed for gathering/checking data over web- checking the bibliography and footnotes etc.

Project 3

Project Title: Displacement, trauma and mental health

Faculty member: Selcan Kaynak

Requirements: minimum 3.0 GPA

Job description: Literature review and preparing short summaries of research and reports, weekly meetings to discuss research.

Project 4

Project Title: Mobile Emergency Rule: Law, Protest, and Authoritarian Consolidation in Turkey

Faculty member: Mert Arslanalp

Requirements: 3rd or 4th year undergraduate student

Job description: Data collection and coding based on newspaper archival research; data visualization; literature review on protests in authoritarian regimes

Dates: June to September (not required to work for all three months)

Project 5

Project Title: The Effect of Syrian Refugees on Turkish Domestic Politics and Foreign Policy

Faculty member: Tolga Sınmazdemir

Requirements: Minimum GPA of 3.00

Job description: Data collection based on online resources and newspaper archival search.

Dates: 1.06.2017 - 15.9.2017

Project 6

Project Title: Migration and Citizenship in the Mediterranean

Faculty member: Zeynep Kadirbeyoglu

Requirements: Being a political science student (3rd or 4yh year)

Job description: Literature search and review (Italy, Spain, Greece)+newspaper archival search.

Dates: 01.06.2017 – 15.07.2017

Number of researchers: 3

 

 

Application Procedure

Applicants should submit an unofficial transcript, CV and a short motivation letter before May 26, 2017 (5pm) to the department Office in IB (IB 5th floor). On top of your letter please indicate the Project number, title and name of the instructor who is carrying it out.

 

Selected students will be contacted for an interview with the project coordinator.
