Graduate Requirements and Dates

 

 

Graduate Admission Process and Guidelines

1. Applicants should submit ALL of their application forms and supporting documents to the Registrar's Office. The application period for 2013-2014 academic year is between April 1st-24th, 2013.

     There will be NO additional admission period for 2013-2014 academic year.

     For proof of English proficiency, you are strongly encouraged to have one of the specified exam (see below) results by 24 April 2013  deadline, but the Department will also be accepting the results of the 5 June 2013 Bogazici University English Proficiency Test (BUEPT).

     The Department will also be accepting the results of ALES exam which will take place on 12 May 2013.

2. Application forms can be filled from the link below:

3. Departmental requirements for admission include research proposal, a written test and an interview. All documents for application will be given to Registrar's Office (not to the department secretary). All the eligible candidates including those overseas must take the written exam on the indicated date.

4. The written exam will take place on May 10th, 2013 10:00 at IB203.

5. The interviews will be held on May 17th, 2013 09:00 at IB512.

6. Applications with missing documents including exam scores will not be admitted to the written exam. The only document which is accepted past the application deadline is the undergraduate diploma.

7. A maximum of 14 applicants will be admitted to the MA program.

8. A maximum of 7 applicants will be admitted to the Ph.D. Program.

9. No students will be admitted to the English preparatory class for the 2013/2014 academic year.

10. Boğaziçi University students who have graduated in or after the 2010/2011 academic year are exempt from presenting an English proficiency document. All other applicants, including the graduates of universities where the medium of instruction is English, should demonstrate English proficiency with an acceptable and valid document as shown below.

12. All the applications must be sent to Bogazici University Registrar Office by the indicated deadline.

APPLICATION AND ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND PROCEDURES
FOR THE MASTER OF ARTS (MA) PROGRAM
 
1. Three academic reference letters.

2. A research proposal between 5-7 pages, type-written in English, on a topic that the applicant finds important and interesting. The proposal should include the research methods that will be employed, and the primary and secondary sources that will be used. Proposals longer than 7 pages and shorter than 5 pages will not be accepted.

3. Undergraduate Diploma. A copy of the diploma authenticated by a notary public or an official certificate of graduation taken from the undergraduate school are accepted.

4. Official transcripts that show all the undergraduate and graduate (if any) courses taken, grades received, and the grade point averages obtained.

5. Undergraduate GPA: Minimum 2.75/4.00 or 70/100

6. ALES Score (For Turkish Applicants): Minimum General Score  (EA): 80

The Department will also be accepting the results of ALES exam which will take place on 13 May 2012.

7. GRE Score (for Foreign Applicants, and for Turkish Applicants to be used instead of the LES).
Minimum Quantitative Test score: 610/800
Minimum Verbal Test Score: 400/800
Minimum Analytical Writing Test Score: 3.5/6

FOR THE DOCTORATE (PhD) PROGRAM
 
1. Three academic reference letters.

2. One copy of the Master's Thesis

3. A research proposal between 10-15 pages, type-written in English, on a topic that the applicant finds important and interesting. The proposal should include the research methods that will be employed, and the primary and secondary sources that will be used. Proposals longer than 15 pages and shorter than 10 pages will not be accepted.

4. Undergraduate and Graduate Diplomas. Copies of the diplomas authenticated by a notary public or official certificates of graduation taken from the undergraduate and graduate schools are accepted.

5. Official transcripts that show all the undergraduate and graduate courses taken, grades received, and the grade point averages obtained

6. Graduate (Master's) GPA: Minimum 3.00/4.00 or 75/100

EVALUATION PROCESS

1. Applicant’s research proposal is very important and is read closely and anonymously by the admission committee.

2. The written exam usually consists of three questions for MA candidates and four questions for PhD candidates.

3. All written exams are read anonymously by the admission committee.

4. Applicant’s research proposal, his/her written exam results together with the student’s application package are taken into account in selecting candidates for an interview. Succeeding in the written test is a must in qualifying for the interview, passing the interview is the necessary condition for being admitted to the program.
